Vegging Out :: Hangawi NYC

One of the best meals on my recent trip to New York was the prix fixe lunch at Hangawi. The moment you walk in and surrender your shoes before entering the dining room,you know you are in for a different type of experience.Wear something comfortable on your lower half, as you will have a seat on a floor cushion and enjoy your lunch service on a low table. Order a soju mojito and get ready for some superb vegan Korean food.

Vegging Out:: Cruising on Holland America’s Statendam

Going on a cruise was not on my bucket list.I’ll meet you anywhere in the world via plane,train or automobile but on a boat?Uh,not really and no thanks.My cousin was the architect of this family vacation and it all sounded good on paper.We embarked on Holland America’s Statendam in Vancouver,BC  and sailed on to Ketchikan,Juneau,Skagway,Glacier Bay and finally disembarked in Seward,AK.

If you ask me about my favorite 5-star vacation experience,I’d probably tell you about the time I stayed at the One & Only resort in Cabo where the staff unpacks your luggage while you sip tequila.And y’know those nifty little sewing kits you get in your hotel room?At the One & Only,the kit will be color coordinated to your wardrobe. Or maybe I’d tell you about the most epic afternoon tea at The Ritz Hotel in London and how they made me the most awesome veggie tea sandwiches ever.For me,the luxury part of the travel experience is all in those little details.Service excellence and the details is where HAL falls short in providing a true 5-star experience.

Rockin’ Daves Bagel Bistro– If you’re in the mood for a gluteny carb fest,cozy up to the counter to order your food and answer the question of the day: Who’s your favorite band/singer? The music is loud,the place is tiny but luckily you don’t need a lot of elbow room to nosh on a bagel sandwich.I got the onion bagel schmeared with hummus and stuffed with cucumber,tomato,sprouts and spinach.My bagel had a nice crisp outside with a good chewiness to the middle.Cost: Bagel sammies for two,about $10

Vegging Out :: Kailua Town Farmers Market

My weekend ritual is not complete until I take a trip to the Kailua Town Farmers Market on Oahu’s east side. I love meeting the people that are growing my food and letting them know how important organic, non-GMO food is to me.

A plant-based lifestyle can seem cost prohibitive if you try to do all of your shopping for organics in the supermarkets. I’ve found that the best way to stretch my dollar is to shop for seasonal, local produce.The savings can be up to 50% less than buying at the supermarket.
